My personal notes for Smart Homes Are Dumb—So I’m Building Mine Better
A video by Dillan Stock from The Stock Pot
These are Dillan's rules when building out his smart home:
- Switches should work. This is the most intuitive experience, especially for people who are visiting.
- Phone not required. Nobody should need their phone to control the house. Any function that requires a phone should be rare and optional.
- Intuitive to operate. Guests shouldn't need instructions on how to turn on lights or adjust the temperature.
- Local only. This has better privacy, and also makes everything run more responsively.
- Fail safe. If something breaks, it shouldn't cause chaos.
