My personal notes for Smart Homes Are Dumb—So I’m Building Mine Better

A video by Dillan Stock from The Stock Pot

These are Dillan's rules when building out his smart home:

  1. Switches should work. This is the most intuitive experience, especially for people who are visiting.
  2. Phone not required. Nobody should need their phone to control the house. Any function that requires a phone should be rare and optional.
  3. Intuitive to operate. Guests shouldn't need instructions on how to turn on lights or adjust the temperature.
  4. Local only. This has better privacy, and also makes everything run more responsively.
  5. Fail safe. If something breaks, it shouldn't cause chaos.
